TOS Crew Review ~ Time 4 Learning (Pre-K)

Photobucket
We had the opportunity to review Time 4 Learning (Pre-K) which consists of TWO areas of fun learning: Pre-K1 (for the younger folks) and Pre-K2 (for the older younger folks).

Wondering if this is right for your child? Here is a quote directly from the site:

No previous knowledge is pre-supposed, and it is meant for pre-readers. The developers of the activities had the abilities of a young child in mind, including:

  • Playful, colorful artwork
  • Auditory instructions and descriptions
  • Buttons that are large enough for small hands to click easily

The only skills required by the child are that he or she is able:

  • To use a computer mouse
  • To understand and to follow simple auditory directions, such as “Choose . . .,” “Which one . . . ” and “Match . . .”

Here is a screenshot of the opening page of PreK1. It is a bit hard to see but some of the areas to choose from are: School Supplies, Alphabet, Colors, Shapes [these are from the row of the screenshot].

Once the child clicks on one of the above, they are taken to a screen similar to this:

Which is again a bit hard to read. The options are: Show Time (which is a mini movie), Memory Match, Paint It and Which. Here is  what “Which” looks like (and in the instance below, the INCORRECT item was picked):

Here is a screen shot of “Phonics”:

There is a neat game that teaches letter recognition along with spelling, which my ds3 enjoyed (anything with shooting is fun, why is that??? *grin*):

And here is the “Report Area” – which again is hard to read. It shows each area, when it was accessed, how many times it was accessed, and if it was completed.

Here is what the PreK 2 area looks like, everything else is similar. The top row consists of: At the Library, Insects, Color Mixing and Seasons.

There is a “Playground” the students can go to in order to “play” (time worked = time allowed to play…it is timed and they are “locked out” of the playground once that session of time is up) but I couldn’t get the screen shot to work, sorry. I also found the playground to have very little “fun” for Pre-K age…but there were neat games for older ages.

To view demos, click HERE. To see a detailed list of what is offered in the Pre-K lesson plans, click HERE.

Besides offering Pre-K thru 8th Grade items, they also have a forum. You can check it out HERE.

The cost? $19.95 per month for the first student, and $14.95 per month for each additional student. This membership fee includes:

  • Online curriculum for grades Pre-K through 8th
  • More than 1,000 interactive animated lessons
  • Self paced lessons that kids will enjoy working on
  • Math & algebra tutorials & printable worksheets
  • Language arts, phonics & grammar lessons
  • Interactive, project-based reading activities
  • Science (grades 1st – 6th) & social studies (grades 2nd – 7th)
  • Detailed reporting for easy record keeping
  • Extensive lesson plans & teaching tools for parents
  • and much more…

Time4Learning is web based, so there is no software to download, no CDs and nothing additional to purchase. Members can access the program 24/7 from anywhere with a computer and an internet connection.

Overall we enjoyed this program, I do feel it is a good online teaching tool for younger children however I feel the cost is a little high for this age.

  1. There is a lot of talk about the cost. Maybe they’ll notice that and look into some different pricing options. ;)

  2. Linda says:

We have been using Time4Learning for 4 years now, but didn’t start until 2nd grade so I had not really looked at the earlier grades. I didn’t find the price prohibitive, but I do only homeshool a single child. It is less expensive than many boxed curricula. I love the fact that lessons are planned for me,and grades are kept, meaning my time is spent with my child, not planning to be with my child. Thanks for the review of the early grades, I will use the review when telling parents of younger children about T4L. Happy homehooling!
