We had the opportunity to review Dig It! Games, Roman Town which is an online computer based archaeology game recommended for ages 8 thru 88.
Taken directly from the website:
Founded by a professional archaeologist and teacher, Dig-It! Games promotes learning through active discovery and the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills in young learners. Dig-It! Games presents authentic and accurate historical information that conforms to the curriculum mandates and Standards of Learning of many states. Dig-It! Games creates hands-on learning games that can be played at home, used as course supplements, and adapt easily to the classroom.
Below is a screen shot of where you get to do the digging. It looks really simple but it is SO MUCH FUN! On the left you can see what you have available…the number of flags, men and tools. As the computer posts flags, you get to pick what tool your digger will use – each tool finds something different…so if you were to play the game again, or if a different player plays and uses a different tool, different items are found!
Below is a picture of an item you have dug up. At first you can only see a little piece of it, but by using your tool to clear the dirt away (moving your mouse back and forth) you eventually get to see what you’ve found. After that, you are taken to an informational section that tells you all kinds of useful information about what that item is and what it was used for – pay attention because you will need to know this stuff to move to the next level!
Once you have found all the items for that level, you are taken to a screen where you have to sort them by type: metal, glass, etc. Then you go to the lab where you can do different things. Some things HAVE to be done to progress forward (like puzzles) and others can be done by choice (like viewing a room to see what the items would have been used for in their time).
One of our very favorite was the 2D and 3D puzzles (3D shown below). You can move the object around using your mouse and use find the appropriate spot for the broken pieces from the items on the left. LOTS OF FUN! Learning so many things without even realizing it! *wink*

Before being able to proceed to the next level, you have to do the “Report File” in which there is a report with blanks that need to be filled in. Using the words available at the bottom, which were learned during that current level, you fill in the report. Once it is filled in completely and correctly, you are allowed to move to the next level.
WARNING! THIS GAME MAY BECOME ADDICTIVE!
We had a GREAT time with this game. It is a wonderful learning tool! (Keeping in mind that your child must be old enough to read or you will need to read everything to them.)
