5-Minute Friday = COMFORT

This meme is hosted by The Gypsy Mama…go check it out, and join in if you’d like!
What is it? (Besides FUN!) She gives you a word and you type for 5 minutes non-stop
not worrying about grammar or punctuation.

Today’s word is: COMFORT

GO

The word “comfort” makes me think of snuggling in a blanket next to a fire on a squishy couch with my family. If only that were real life!

Unfortunately in real life I look for comfort in all the WRONG places…sugary foods for example. Really tough to change! I have an addictive personality (as I have overcome other major addictions in my life – thank the Lord) but sugar is REALLY hard because it is EVERYWHERE and it is SO EASY to grab!

But where I REALLY want to find my comfort – is in Him. That’s right ~ in Jesus Christ. He filled the hole in my gut about 12 years ago and I know He can fill this hole too…I’m just not exactly sure how.

He has brought more comfort to my life than ANYTHING. He never wants anything from me – except for me to spend time with Him. And when I do, I ALWAYS feel better. He is my one and only TRUE COMFORT.

Now to figure out how to help Him to overcome the sugar addiction I try to run to first…

STOP

Blogging Through the Alphabet ~ “H” for Hyperactivity

Blogging Through the Alphabet

I have posted several times about our youngest son and his abundant energy, etc. (They can be found under the “Spirited Child” tab at the top of my blog.) Having a ~ spirited, high needs, hyperactive, ADHD – whatever you want to call it ~ child is very draining on a mother, and a family. Although we all love him so very much (because he has an adorable personality that is just as big), the CONSTANT motion, CONSTANT noise, CONSTANT talking, is often hard for all of us to handle.

This mixed with family that disregards what we say and who tell us our son “is a normal boy with energy”. It is even more frustrating. And all I can say is “No, he isn’t.” They don’t understand. They say I don’t give him enough attention or enough discipline. They have no idea.

This then feels like a DOUBLE WHAMMY!

For me, knowing others understand what I am going through is such a relief! Seriously. And every now and then I find that even I forget that he is a “special needs” child and that he NEEDS to be handled differently. But how? *THAT* is the question. The question I have yet to find the right answer to.

I posted a request for parenting books / resources on Facebook and a friend recommended Raising Godly Tomatoes. What a great site! (I have much more to read there!) but that site also led me to a couple of other sites that had some great information as well. One was NATHHAN (National Challenged Homeschoolers Associated Network) which has a page of articles on ADD / ADHD. I found this article titled “Simply Self-Controlled Special Needs Children” which had a lot of good information. This in particular stuck out:

Varying levels of hyperactivity in just one child in a family can make life stressful and disheartening for all. The hyperactive child tends to have a lot of energy, emotions, and independence and is usually very inquisitive and curious by nature. However, as we just said, these are not necessarily negative qualities. They simply are going to require more diligence and intense child training with a greater degree of restraint, guidance and channeling.

WOW! There is our life. IN PRINT. Someone DOES understand. It isn’t just me. I don’t know why reading things like this always seems to allow me to breathe easier. Again, I guess I get to believing that “it IS just me and there is nothing “special” about our son” and then I start doubting myself even more. So, I NEED to read things like this that let me know it ISN’T just me and we ARE in a special situation.

You see…we homeschool because we felt led by the Lord to do so. I see now that it was no accident. Our youngest son would NEVER survive in public school. They would drug him and squish his amazing personality in a few seconds without ever thinking twice.

Another friend shared this post “OCD, ADHD, ODD {Oh My!}” from The MOB Society. This post is by Clay & Sally Clarkson’s son, Nathan, sharing a bit of his story. It is a wonderful post about being different and being who God made you to be.

At home with us he has the opportunity to flourish and grow…being the beautiful person the Lord made…now…I just need to figure out how to help him, how to guide him.

Blog Cruise ~ Homeschooling on a Budget

Photobucket

First, don’t get me wrong…this is NOT a budgeting post! I do not “budget” (although my husband probably wishes I did!) So, with that said…we can continue…

Considering our income, living frugal is our only means of survival. For my husband it comes pretty naturally. He was raised to be frugal. He is also a public school teacher (weird, I know) and they know A LOT about being frugal (because they don’t make much money and yet they have to supply a bunch of things for their class/es).

I guess the biggest way we are frugal in our homeschooling is by purchasing used curriculum whenever possible. (I use different Facebook groups as well as homeschoolclassifieds.com.) I normally sell one years curriculum to purchase the next. We also do not normally use the student book, we write answers in a notebook – that way we can resell it as a package.

Another way we save money homeschooling is by being on the Schoolhouse Review Crew! What better way to get our hands on a ton of awesome items – for free! Right!?!?!?!

Additionally we save / reuse whatever we can. Bottles, jars, etc so that doing different projects costs a bit less. We try to purchase items on sale or from the dollar store as well. Each thing by itself doesn’t seem to be a big deal, but once you look at them for a year – the savings add up!

We also try to find simpler ways to do things or maybe we alter them a little so we CAN use something we already have instead of having to purchase something new.

One of the biggest things we do is use our local library not only for books to borrow but also to purchase (they have a continual sale of available books for 25 cents) as well as the newspapers and magazines (FREE!) they no longer need.

Although being frugal did not come naturally to me – I am learning the excellent benefits it offers our family over “the long haul”.

Hop over and see what other Crew Members had to say about being frugal and homeschooling. (Link will go live on Tuesday, May 7, 2013).

Blogging Through the Alphabet ~ “G” is for God {and how I did NOT want to hear it}

Blogging Through the Alphabet

“G” is for God {and how I did NOT want to hear it}

I got saved when I was just short of 30 years old – a miracle they say. I guess percentage-wise if you don’t get saved as a child, you most likely won’t get saved. I am SO THANKFUL that statistic wasn’t true with me!

You would not have recognized me before I got saved…I had a pretty rough life as a younger and it showed in everything I did and said. And one thing was FOR SURE – I did NOT want to hear “the G word”! (Any time I heard the word “God” I changed it to Good Orderly Direction.) You see, what I was shown about God was that He was judgmental, unloving and hateful. And with me and my life and what I was doing – He definitely didn’t want to have anything to do with me!

But you see…THAT WAS WRONG! Every single part of it! I was broken and He *DID* want to have something to do with me. He wanted to mend my broken spots. To fill that void within that nothing could ever satisfy.

Are you broken? Is nothing filling “that void”? If so, maybe you should think about allowing the Lord into your life. If you want to learn more, you can check out the Salvation page I have here on my blog.

It has really been on my heart A LOT lately to share with those who are hurting, who feel they are broken, that there IS a way out. There is a way to feel better about your life and yourself. He *WILL* fill that void.
