Ever heard of TouchMath? I hadn’t…not sure why…this is an AMAZING program!

Oh my goodness – can you say, “Mom couldn’t open the boxes fast enough?” My son was super excited about this from the second he saw it! This is an wonderful program that uses a serious HANDS ON approach to learning numbers and math.

I was provided the Preschool Curriculum, the Touch Shapes, the Texture Cards and the 3-D Numerals.

The curriculum ($59.95) is 203 pages consisting of six modules and is meant to be a complete (not supplemental) program. The modules cover:

  1. Counting and Number Sense
  2. Comparing and Classifying
  3. Sorting, Classifying, Graphing, and Patterning
  4. Identifying, Sorting, and Classifying 2-D Shapes
  5. Identifying, Sorting, and Classifying 3-D Shapes
  6. Representing Quantities and Numbers

The Touch Shapes ($30.00) are 108 plastic shape pieces. There are six shapes in six colors in three sizes. These are wonderful because they show the student that regardless of color and size, it is still the same shape. These are also handy for  sorting by size. We used these quite a bit with this program.

The Texture Cards ($99.00) are very unique! They are six sets of nine cards (45 cards total). The sets are: TouchPoint Texture, Animal Texture, Shape Texture, Sea Life Texture and Fruit Texture. We only used a couple of these sets in our review time and although this program can easily be done without these, I would highly recommend them for younger preschoolers as I can really see how they would help them learn that a number is something more than just something on paper. For instance, the Animal Texture number 5 shows five donkeys. As the child touches the soft fur of each donkey, and counts to five, they are learning in SO MANY WAYS!

The 3-D Numerals ($79.00) are such an amazing way to teach learners who need to touch to understand. I absolutely LOVE these! They are such an easy way for kids to learn! For the most part we used these as a way to put numbers in order and to pick which number goes between others and things like that.

“The TouchMath Pre-K Homeschool Program is designed to build the pre-K foundational skills that will lead to success in kindergarten.”…”At the pre-K level, mastery of each skill is not the goal. The goal is exposure to the skills through experiential activities to build the foundation for kindergarten success.”

At first I had a hard time putting all the pieces together for this…but once I figured it out, it was VERY EASY. I ended up printing most of the pages and putting them into a binder with separators for each module. Once that was done, ALL the work for the teacher / parent is prepared for you and I LOVE THAT!

The actual curriculum works by itself – you do not NEED the manipulatives to complete it. However, I HIGHLY suggest them as they are the part that really “completes the picture” for the kids. Although you can use “everyday items” if you’d like – to me this added some FUN to the program. It added items that my son didn’t use other than when learn with this curriculum. That makes is more fun!

In all honesty, I think this program was a bit easy for my five year old son. However, I still TOTALLY LOVE the concept behind this curriculum! I can definitely see how this program would be beneficial for those with special needs.

Here are some the pages he did:

Review & Giveaway ~ Math House Games

Photobucket

I was provided a copy of Carlito C. Caterpillar’s MathHouse Game Card set which is a really neat circle clipped set of nicely made-to-last cards that you, the parent, read and review in preparation for using the thoughts within with your younger children. The overall objective: to teach your child math thru play. Along with the card set, you need to print off (for free) from their website some different “teaching tools” (colors, shapes, numbers, etc) which you use along with normal things found around the house: fruit, pennies, cheerios, etc.

I LOVE the idea behind this card set…it is right up the alley of homeschoolers ~ bring fun to learning!  The beginning cards talk about different “Myths” associated with learning / teaching math and then the cards move into the games. The set consists of 20 overall steps to learning – an “A” (easier) side and a “B” (a little harder) side and then 5 final steps / games on “Operations” (scissors, glue, etc).

Overall I like the card set, however the price for the set is a little on the steep side, in my opinion, selling for $23.95 (shipping is free!). However, if you could use it with multiple kids, unlike me, the set would be more cost effective. You can find it at the c3pla.com site by clicking HERE. You can also enter the giveaway I have going on below.

Now, for the super exciting part! Not only was I given a copy to review…but I am allowed to give *ONE* copy away to my readers!

TOS Crew Review ~ Curiosity Files: Puffer Fish

Photobucket

The Curiosity Files: Puffer Fish
The Old Schoolhouse Magazine
e-book, 77 pages
Recommended ages 8 – 13

We had the opportunity to review The Curiosity Files: Puffer Fish by the The Old Schoolhouse Magazine. This 77 page lapbook, notebook, unit study – I dunno – these all run together for me, being so new to homeschooling. But whatever it is – we enjoyed it! :) [I think it's called a unit study, right?] :)

So, what’s the point? Covering all mandatory classes ~ English, Math, Science and History (plus some other stuff! like drawing and copy work).

Photobucket

Below is a timeline he did during the study.

Photobucket

The subjects are completed in a fun and easy manner – almost felt as if ds14 wasn’t even learning or doing schoolwork! Below are some different puffer fish he was asked to find and draw.

Photobucket

The “worst” part (in his opinion) of this entire thing [which wasn't that bad!] was the money conversion he was asked to do.

Photobucket

Because the entire study is focused on something already enjoyed or interested in, it made the learning FUN! (which is what we want, right?)

We really enjoyed making the paper mache puffer fish!

I assigned several pages per day and it took about three weeks to complete (the paint drying caused a bit of a delay too).

Would we recommend? YES! At $6.95 per ebook you can’t beat it! Some other Curiosity Files topics are Blue Diamond, Dung Beetle, MRSA, Red Tide, Zombie Fire Ants, Blue-footed Booby, Cicada Killing Wasp and Quicksand. You can also get the entire set of 9 as a bundle for $46.00, click HERE to see more about the bundle. {Quick note however…some of these ebooks are on sale for $1.00 so you might check that out while the sale lasts.}

TOS Crew Review ~ City Creek Press / Times Alive

Photobucket

We had the opportunity to review City Creek Press’ Times Alive software taken from Times Tables the Fun Way.  City Creek Press is owned and operated by what sounds like an amzing woman: Judy Liautaud.  She came up with the Times Tables the Fun Way idea while working at Sylvan Learning Centers.  Studies show that students, on average, retain 95% of the facts learned thru Judy’s methods.  AMAZING!

So, what are her methods?  They are combining visual images, songs and stories with the number facts.  This program works the times tables for zero thru nine.  There are videos, coloring pages, songs and “tests”.

When they enter the program, this is the first screen they see.  It shows where they have been, where they are and where they are going.  They can also click on ANY of the items, they do not have to go in order (although it makes more sense to do it that way).

Photobucket

This is a screen shot of one of the song / stories for 4 x 4.

Photobucket

For online demos (where you can actually participate too!), click HERE.

Although I believe some of this was a little “young” for ds14, I also believe the concept has helped improve his times tables!  When asked, DS14 said he learned there are creative ways to find out answers.  Love this!  He often doesn’t have anything to say about the programs we review…he didn’t hesitate on this one.  B.e.a.-u-ti-ful!

The Times Alive Software costs $48.95 for CD or $44.94 downloaded.  I think this is a little high for one child, but if you have several I believe it would be an investment well spent.

You can order a free catalog HERE.  If you have children that are working more on their addition, click HERE for more information.

TOS Crew Review ~ Ten Marks

 Photobucket

Ten Marks is an online Math program offering lessons for grades 3 thru 10.  The cost (per student) is $10 per month, $49 for six months or $80 for twelve months.

There is an assessment (which I highly recommend be done!) to find out where the student / child should be placed within their program.  Once this is decided, worksheets are generated with a specified time allowed to complete them.  (Nothing happens if they are not completed on time, except that no new worksheets are set up.)  The parent / teacher can pick from 3 – 7 worksheets per week.  Then the student is allowed to work on whichever worksheets they prefer in whatever order of those needing to be completed.

There is the “student account” and the “parent account”.  When the student first logs in, this is the screen they see, showing the worksheets they have completed, need to complete and that some are still to come.

Photobucket

They can pick whichever of the sheets available they want to work on first.  When chosen, the typical working screen looks like this – yes, multiple choice.

Photobucket

Additionally, there are game rewards given as the student progresses successfully.

Photobucket

The parent/main account allows you to view what your student has been working on, along with their progress.  Although it is hard to see this picture, it shows the date, what was worked on and the score received.

Photobucket

Photobucket

A nice feature is that you can pause the program while you are away on vacation or holidays (which we needed to use while doing this review) or for whatever you may need time away for an extended period.

There are several videos you can watch about the TenMarks program.  Click HERE to see them.

Our experience:

The concept is wonderful!  The different options are great!  However, we had a VERY DIFFICULT time with this program.  The hints GAVE us the answer, but they did not instruct on HOW to get the answer.  The available video lessons often did not have anything to do with the current problem being worked on…therefore were often of little help in learning how to solve the problem.

I do know that several crew mates really liked this program…so make sure to click the link at the bottom and see what others had to say!
