I was immediately drawn to this book – out of desperation of needing as much information as possible to work with MY highly spirited child. Carol Barnier’s book How to Get Your Child off the Refrigerator and on to Learning: Homeschooling Highly Distractable, ADHD, or Just Plain Fidgety Kids consists of ten chapters and two appendixes. Carol starts with a basic description of the child/ren she will be referring to in the remainder of the book. She talks A LOT about manipulatives and finding other ways to teach other than “copy and trace this” and “1 + 2 = 3″ ~ which simply do NOT work with highly spirited children. She not only talks about these things in a general sense – she actually provides exact example and reproducibles! (I personally REALLY enjoyed the part about teaching letters, phonics and reading! I can’t wait to try this with P!)

In her usual easy-to-read manner, Carol has provided a wonderful resource for parents of children who do not want to sit still! If you need ideas, this book has them!

I am really excited to be able to offer one copy to one of my readers! Enter below…

We could REALLY use this book – my twin sons are SO active, and SO distracted – Homeschooling 4 and need some more ideas for sensory breaks and kinestetic learners!

I didn’t know Carol had been a prodigal daughter. I’ve borrowed this book title from my local library before, it always has a hold on it so I can’t get my hands on it again. Would love to have my own copy. I have a sizzler husband, and two sizzler boys.

What did I learn from Carol? Well I learned of this book give away from her post on Facebook. I have, also, used some of her teaching techniques with my daughter and they have worked great. I am just beginning home schooling with my six year old and would love to learn to do Carol’s way.

    Thank you for this contest!

I learned that I should probably discuss the possibility of making people tired with my daughter… and that somebody should probably have discussed it with me long long ago :)

I learned you should love the child(ren) God blesses you with no matter what. Sometimes it’s not the child that need to to adjust and change but the parent. Don’t expect your child to be what is considered “normal” but embrace the challenge(s) of your beautiful child(ren).

  22. My son is not quite school age yet but I am thinking about homeschooling, at least for the first few years. This book might help me with myself as I am easily distracted. After reading a little about Carol, I learned that she is a pastors daughter and has struggled with faith in the past.
