As a family of believers who meet all together on Sundays, I was excited to read Children in Church. My family is a part of a non-denominational group of people who meet together. We do not call it church – we call it meeting – as church is not a place but the group of all believers. We meet on Wednesday evenings for prayer and Bible Study and on Sundays for Remembrance Meeting, Sunday School and afternoon meeting. Sundays last about four hours at the meeting hall. During this time, all family members are together – except during Sunday School. During that time we split by age, sort of. All the adults stay in one room, the teen / middle schoolers go to another and the elementary to another. Besides this time (about 30 minutes), we are all together in the same place(s).
So, with this said, I have a pretty good understanding, and am in agreement with, what is shared in this book. There is no place in Scripture where it says the family should be split up and that children should not be heard. This book has A LOT of Scripture backing up how they believe worship should be – with the entire family.
The really neat thing about this book is that it is almost a guide to help those who aren’t sure if this is the proper way. It starts with a lot of Scripture – and Scripture is ALL THE WAY THROUGH. It has parents think – AND PRAY – about what is in the book. It then shares how to plan to move forward. There is A LOT in this book about thinking ahead and being prepared…from talking with other people in your congregation, to talking with your Pastor to how your family will sit (what order), etc. I don’t think there is much, if anything, that was left to leave a family feeling as if they cannot do this – should the Lord so lead them to do so.
The book is written in a very easy to understand manner and does not put anyone down for what their beliefs may be. It even has a “Note to Church Leaders” section in the very back that many may find helpful.

This is something I’m interested in. My man doesn’t believe that children should be in ‘big’ church with the rest of us and I’m not doing a good job of convincing him.
Our church recently gave up our Children’s Church and so the kids are in the santuary for the entire service. It has been interesting to watch different parent/child relationships and see the church as a whole react to the presence of a lot more little ones. This book might be a good read for us all!
